Neelam, or Blue Sapphire, is the most powerful and fast-acting gemstone in Vedic astrology. It is the gemstone of Saturn (Shani) and is famous for its ability to bring either immense success or sudden challenges, depending on its suitability.
General Information
Planet & Zodiac: Ruled by Saturn, it is the birthstone for Capricorn (Makar) and Aquarius (Kumbh). It is also compatible with Taurus and Libra ascendants.
Physical Properties: A member of the Corundum family, it ranks 9 on the Mohs scale, making it extremely durable.
Origin: The finest Blue Sapphires come from Kashmir (rare) and Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Other sources include Burma and Thailand.
Color: The most desirable color is a vivid, transparent "Royal Blue" or "Cornflower Blue."
Substitutes: Amethyst (Jamunia) or Blue Topaz are milder, more affordable alternatives.
How to Wear Neelam
Blue Sapphire is highly reactive; follow this procedure strictly to ensure it aligns with Saturn’s energy:
Metal: Best set in Silver, White Gold, or Platinum. Avoid yellow gold unless specifically advised, as Sun (Gold) and Saturn are enemies.
Finger: Wear it on the middle finger of the working hand (right hand for most).
Weight: Typically 1/12th of your body weight (e.g., a 5-carat stone for a 60 kg person).
Day & Time: Saturday. The best time is usually during Shani Hora (often early morning before sunrise or in the evening after sunset) during Shukla Paksha.
Purification: Cleanse the ring by dipping it in a mixture of raw cow milk, honey, and Ganga Jal for 15–30 minutes.
Mantra: Chant the Shani Mantra 108 times before wearing: "Om Sham Shanicharaya Namah".
