In this article, let's reflect on what is 7 generation connection that is referred in our shastras.
Husband and Wife – The first generation.
Children (Siblings) – The second generation: Children inherit 50%-50% chromosomes from their parents and share 50% of their genes with each other.
Grandchildren – The third generation: Share 25% of their genes with the first generation (grandparents).
Fourth Generation – Share 12.5% of genes with the first generation.
Fifth Generation – Share 6.25% of genes with the first generation.
Sixth Generation – Share 3.12% of genes with the first generation.
Seventh Generation – Share 1.56% of genes with the first generation.
Eighth Generation – Share less than 1% of genes with the first generation.
Hence, from the original ancestors or couple, relationships and familial ties are recognized up to the seventh generation. Marriages within these seven generations are considered prohibited to avoid genetic disorders due to close genetic sharing.
From the eighth generation onwards, the familial bond is no longer recognized, and relationships are not regarded as close kin. This is why the bond between husband and wife is considered a sacred union lasting for seven lifetimes (सात जन्म), symbolizing an enduring connection.
In addition, relationships are defined as:
Sapinda: Recognized for three generations.
From the fourth to the seventh generation, familial ties are recognized but not as Sapinda.
After the seventh generation, the relationship is dissolved, but individuals remain part of the same gotra (clan).
This demonstrates the incredible wisdom of our ancestors, which deserves our pride and respect. While the mention of seven generations is common, its scientific and logical basis becomes clearer with this explanation.
